A young Buddhist monk was journeying back to his home. The young Buddhist monk was traveling alone. It had been long since he had visited home. Many days passed by walking. One day, on his journey back home, he came to a river. It was a beautiful day and the river was shining magnificently.
Now, the road chosen by the young Buddhism monk, required him to cross the river. The young monk looked around trying to find a way to get across. He tried hard but could not find anything. After a long time of looking for a way to cross the river, the young Buddhist monk decided to give up and thought I am never going to find way across this river. Just as he was about to give up on crossing the river, he spotted a man on the other side looked like a Zen teacher.
He was mediating. The young Buddhist monk called out loudly. O wise hoe, will you answer a question of mine? The Zen teacher opened his eyes and looked at the young monk. The young monk asked, sir, please tell me how can I get on the other side? The Zen teacher’s face brightened up at the question. He looked at the young man and said my dear friend you are already on the other side.
If we see in our lives then we will find that as a human beings, it seems as if we are constantly trying to get somewhere. More stuff, better job, next vacation. It is almost as if we are shouting to the world. How do I get over there? Or right here is not enough so how do I get over there? We also look for thinks in over lives. But we forget that we already have too much to be thankful for. But every time, we set our eyes on the things. We do not have or possess. We always want to get something better. The other side, here refers to the human desired of getting to the next best thing without appreciating what we already have. The Zen teacher was trying to tell the young Buddhist monk that he was already there. Like the most of us. Therefore, always appreciated what you have.
