9 habits to adopt to become a
Little wise every day:
Living a wise life isn’t about knowing all the answers—it’s about asking the right questions.
It’s the ability to learn from our experiences, to adapt, and to continually grow.
You see, wisdom is not a destination, but a journey, and like any journey, it’s made up of daily steps.
Adopting certain habits can position us to become a little wiser every day.
These are practices that enhance our awareness, deepen our understanding, and broaden our perspective. They help us navigate life with more grace, resilience, and creativity.
So if you’re ready to embark on this journey towards wisdom, here are eight habits you might consider adopting.
1) Embrace curiosity
Curiosity is one of the key cornerstones of wisdom. It is the driving force that propels us towards learning, discovering, and growing.
By cultivating a sense of wonder and inquisitiveness about the world around us, we open ourselves up to new ideas, perspectives, and experiences.
Consider this – every great thinker, every innovator, every wise individual in history has been characterized by their curiosity.
They were not content with accepting things at face value but chose to delve deeper, to question, and to explore.
The habit of embracing curiosity involves continuously asking questions and seeking out answers.
It’s about challenging assumptions and not being afraid to admit when we don’t know something. It’s about being open-minded and willing to learn from anyone and anything around us.
It’s important to remember that curiosity isn’t about accumulating facts or knowledge for its own sake. It’s a pathway to deeper understanding, empathy, and wisdom.
So if you’re looking to become a little wiser every day, start by asking more questions.
2) Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness is a habit that has become a cornerstone in my own journey towards wisdom.
It’s about being fully present in the moment, observing our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment.
It’s a practice that allows us to tune into our inner experiences and engage more fully with the world around us.
Mindfulness encourages self-awareness, empathy, and an increased capacity for understanding – all elements that contribute to wisdom.
It helps us to respond rather than react, to listen rather than speak, and to observe rather than judge.
Incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine can be as simple as:
- Taking a few moments each day to focus on your breath
- Noticing the sensations in your body
- Savoring the taste of your morning coffee
As Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Buddhist monk known for his teachings on mindfulness and peace, wisely said: “The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.”
3) Foster self-awareness
Self-awareness is the foundation on which wisdom is built.
When we’re self-aware, we’re able to:
- Understand our thoughts, feelings, motivations, and actions.
- Recognize our strengths and weaknesses, and our triggers and responses.
- Acknowledge our biases and challenge our assumptions
But how do we cultivate this self-awareness?
One powerful tool is reflection.
By regularly taking the time to look inward, to examine our experiences and our reactions to them, we can gain valuable insights into ourselves.
One method I’ve found particularly effective for fostering self-awareness is a transformative mirror exercise I discuss in my video.
This exercise involves asking yourself five powerful questions that can enhance self-love and improve your relationship with yourself.
By fostering a deeper understanding of your inner strengths and vulnerabilities, you’ll be better equipped to navigate life’s challenges with grace and wisdom.

4) Take responsibility
One of the hardest, yet most crucial habits to adopt on the path to wisdom is taking full responsibility for our lives.
It’s easy to blame circumstances, other people, or even fate for where we find ourselves.
But the truth is, our choices and actions have led us to this point.
Taking responsibility doesn’t mean carrying a burden of guilt or self-blame. It’s about acknowledging that we have the power to shape our lives. It’s about recognizing that we can choose our response in any situation.
Yes, we can’t control everything that happens to us, but we can control how we react.
But why is this habit so crucial to wisdom?
Because it empowers us. It puts us in the driver’s seat of our lives. It allows us to learn from our mistakes and grow from our setbacks.
This isn’t an easy habit to adopt. It requires courage and honesty.
But by embracing this habit, we give ourselves the chance to live life with more freedom and authenticity.
5) Reject dominance hierarchies
In a world often dominated by power, status, and wealth, it’s easy to fall into the trap of viewing life through the lens of dominance hierarchies.
We are taught to believe that some people are inherently more valuable than others, and we measure our worth based on where we stand in these hierarchies.
But the truth is, this way of thinking is not only harmful but also fundamentally flawed.
Every individual has inherent dignity and worth that is not determined by their power, status, or wealth.
Rejecting dominance hierarchies is about recognizing and respecting the fundamental equality of all individuals. It’s about cultivating relationships based on mutual respect, empathy, and cooperation rather than power dynamics.
This doesn’t mean we ignore the realities of inequality in our world. But it does mean that we strive to challenge these structures rather than perpetuating them.
In one of my videos, I explore some of these ideas further, discussing the “illusion of happiness” and how chasing it can make us miserable.
I argue that true contentment comes from within, by embracing life’s challenges, fostering meaningful relationships, and staying true to oneself.
Rejecting dominance hierarchies is not an easy habit to adopt. It requires courage and a commitment to challenging societal norms. But it’s an essential step towards living a life of authenticity and wisdom.
6) Embrace obstacles
When we encounter obstacles, our first instinct is often to resist or avoid them.
We perceive them as hindrances, as setbacks that disrupt our plans and keep us from achieving our goals.
But what if we changed our perspective?
What if, instead of viewing obstacles as barriers, we saw them as opportunities for growth and learning?
Every challenge we face is an opportunity to tap into our creative potential and find innovative solutions. It’s a chance to test our resilience, to learn more about ourselves, and to grow stronger.
Instead of getting discouraged by failure, we can choose to view it as feedback and an invitation to adapt and evolve. Every setback carries within it the seeds of creative possibility.
This habit may seem unconventional at first. After all, it’s natural to want a smooth, obstacle-free path.
But by embracing the challenges that come our way, we can become a little wiser every day.
7) Foster authentic relationships
We, as humans, are inherently social beings. Our relationships play a crucial role in shaping our experiences, influencing our perspectives, and enriching our lives.
But the quality of these relationships has a far more profound impact than the quantity.
In the pursuit of wisdom, fostering authentic relationships is key.
These are relationships that are built on mutual respect, empathy, and shared values. They’re about genuine connection rather than superficial socializing.
Authentic relationships:
- Provide us with a safe space to express ourselves openly and honestly
- Allow us to learn from others’ experiences and perspectives, thereby broadening our own understanding
- Offer us support in times of need and celebrate with us in times of joy
By fostering authentic relationships, we enrich not only our own lives but also those of the people we connect with.
It’s through these connections that we find the courage to pursue our dreams, the resilience to overcome challenges, and the joy of shared experiences.
8) Cultivate a sense of purpose
To become wiser every day, it’s important to cultivate a sense of purpose.
Purpose acts as a compass, guiding us in the decisions we make and the paths we choose to follow. It gives meaning to our actions and adds depth to our experiences.
But how we we find our purpose?
Our purpose comes to us when we align our actions with our deepest values and passions and when we make choices that reflect who we are and what we stand for.
Cultivating a sense of purpose isn’t a one-time task but an ongoing process. It requires:
- Self-reflection
- Openness to new experiences
- The courage to make choices that align with our authentic selves
But by cultivating a sense of purpose, we make each day an opportunity for growth and learning. We transform our everyday actions into meaningful contributions towards a more fulfilling life.
9) Contribute to something greater than yourself
Finally, becoming a little wiser every day involves recognizing that we are part of something greater than ourselves.
This realization can be both humbling and empowering. It reminds us of our interconnectedness and the impact of our actions on the world around us.
Contributing to something greater than ourselves can take many forms. It might involve:
- Volunteering for a cause you care about
- Supporting businesses that align with your values
- Being kind and compassionate in your everyday interactions
Regardless of the form it takes, this habit is about using your unique gifts in service of others.
It’s about recognizing that your actions have the power to create positive change. And it’s about striving to leave the world a little better than you found it.
By adopting this habit, we not only enrich our own lives but also contribute to a more compassionate, just, and sustainable world. And in doing so, we become a little wiser every day.
Chemistry of wisdom
Our brains are wired to learn, to adapt, and to grow. Each time we embrace curiosity, practice mindfulness, foster self-awareness, or take responsibility, we are engaging our brain’s incredible capability to reshape itself.
This concept, known as neuroplasticity, is the science behind our capacity for wisdom.
Just as a muscle grows stronger with exercise, our brain becomes wiser with each habit we adopt.
The neural pathways associated with these habits become stronger and more efficient, making it easier for us to make wise choices and respond wisely to life’s challenges.
Whether it’s through the quiet introspection of mindfulness or the active engagement of curiosity, the habits we adopt feed into this cycle of growth. They shape not just our experiences and perspectives but also our very biology.
So as we continue to adopt these habits and become a little wiser every day, we’re not just enriching our lives – we’re also transforming our brains.
