I read about an eight year old boy who grew up in Kansas in the early 1900s. During the winter, he and his brother would go to school early to light the wood fire in the large potbellied stove in the classroom so that it would be warm when the rest of the students arrived.

But on day someone accidentally put gasoline in the kerosene container he used to start the wood on fire. The next morning, when he lit the match, there was a huge explosions. His brother was killed instantly. The teacher cannot running and found this little boy unconscious with the lower half of his body burned beyond recognition.

She pulled him out of the fire thinking he was dead but somehow he had survived. He had lost all the flesh on his knees and shine and all the toes on his left foot. His mother was told that if he did make it, he would be crippled never able to walk again and the doctors recommended amputating his legs. But this little body was a fighter. Against all odds, he survived. He made up his mind he was not only going to walk again, but he told everyone that on day he would run again.

God has a plan to take every adversity and every hardship you go through and use it. He is not going to beat you down and make our life miserable. No, God’s dream is to take that difficulty and supernaturally turn it around and use it to bring you good. He will use those tough times to bring you out stronger, more mature and prepared for promotion. Goodness, mercy and unfailing love are God’s plan for you.

It is interesting that while we cannot see tree’s roots, the roots are where the tree gets its life. We see the outside, the leaves, the branches and the trunk, but the roots are what feed the tree. When your roots are healthy, positive and hopeful, that is feeding you with life, strength, encouragement and hope. The problem is that if you have bitter toots, you are not being fed the right nutrients. You wonder why you don not have any energy, why you do not laugh anymore, why you do not dream like you used to, it is because those bitter roots are feeding you bitterness, self-pity and anger. That is draining all the life, the stringy, the passion and the joy out of you. They are feeding you what they are.

The most important relationship you have is your relationship with yourself. If you do not get along with yourself, you won’t be able to get along with anybody else. If will affect every relationship, including your relationship with God. If you are living under guilt, felling condemned and unworthy, you won’t go to God with boldness.

You won’t ask Him for your dreams. The reason that many people can’t get along with others is because they do not like themselves. They are insecure, they are bitter, they are defensive and it spills over into their relationship. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. You cannot love your neighbor if you do not first love yourself.

You do not have a healthy respect for yourself, if you are not putting on His approval each day, knowing that you are masterpiece, knowing that you are make in the image of God, then you will start focusing on your faults and shortcomings. You will end up feeling insecure and inferior. That will cause you to struggle in relationships.
